One of the newest winners of the Grammy Awards, Angelique Kidjo, has been the subject of discourse for many African lovers of music. Angelique Kidjo had won Mother Nature Grammy Award beating other great music stars from Africa and abroad.
However, some music fans of Nigerian artists who lost out at the Grammy Awards to Angelique Kidjo have been challenging the popularity of Angelique Kidjo which might have qualified him to win the Grammy Award.
Although, some of the fans of Angelique Kidjo in Nigeria are maintaining the stance that no artist born and raised in Africa is, currently, greater than Kidjo, but this claim seems to be sounding weak and unsatisfactory to calm the opposing fans.
This argument had lead to many opposing fans querying the feet of Angelique Kidjo to make a sell out at the London O2 Arena.
Remarkably, Nigerian superstar, Ayomide Ibrahim Balogun, who is popularly known as Wizkid is the first Nigerian artist to sell out at London O2 arena in May 2018 when he had his Afrorepublik concert. He repeated the same feet in 2021 when he sold out at London O2 again for his Made in Lagos tour.
Besides, D'Banj had in 2009, sold out at the London O2 Arena while in 2018, the former Mavin first lady, Tiwa Savage, became the first Nigerian female artist to make a sold out at the O2 Arena during her 'The Savage Tour'.
In 2018, Davido claimed to have sold out the main bowl of the 20,000 capacity London O2 Arena; the claim which was opposed by some critics who insisted that he did not really sell out the arena. Although, the customer care of the London O2 Arena was able to prove the claim that he really sold out the O2 Arena.
Considerably, the popularity of a musician could not be quantified with the ability to win Grammy Award, but the fact that Angelique Kidjo has performed before prominent individuals and great venues, across the world, could be a pointer to the fact that she can make a sell out at the London O2 Arena.
For instance, she had performed at Olympics and FIFA World Cup opening ceremonies; she had performed at the inauguration of former President of the United State of America, Barack Obama and, honorably, sang at the United Nation General Assembly. Definitely, she can make a sell out at the O2 Arena, if she has show at the venue.
Come to think about this, if Angelique Kidjo could perform before an assembly of world leaders and earned their attentions, there is greater proximity that she would make a sell out at O2 Arena and the average music lovers may even go through stampede, in struggle to have a glance at her.
